Why Is My 11-Month-Old Waking Earlier? A Simple Guide for Tired Parents
Share
Has your baby suddenly started waking much earlier than usual? One week they might be sleeping until 7:30 a.m., and the next they’re wide awake at 6:00 a.m. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many parents experience this around the 10–11 month stage, and in most cases there’s a simple reason behind it.
Why This Happens
At around 11 months, babies go through major developmental changes. They may be learning to stand, taking their first steps, or experimenting with new sounds and words. All this growth keeps their brains busy, which can temporarily affect their sleep patterns.
Even if your baby is still getting around 13–14 hours of total sleep in a day, their sleep schedule may shift for a while.
Simple Things You Can Try
1. Block out morning light
Mornings start getting brighter earlier in the year, and even a small amount of light can signal to your baby that it’s time to wake up. Blackout curtains can help keep the room dark and support longer sleep.
2. Adjust nap timing slightly
Try moving the first nap 15–20 minutes later. Small adjustments like this can help reset your baby’s internal body clock and encourage a slightly later wake-up time.
3. Keep early mornings calm and quiet
If your baby wakes earlier than usual, keep the interaction minimal. Change their nappy if needed, offer a brief cuddle, and keep the room dim and quiet. This helps reinforce that it’s still sleep time.
4. Give it time
Early waking at this age is often a temporary phase. As your baby adjusts to their new skills and developmental changes, their sleep usually settles again within a few weeks.
The Good News
While early mornings can be exhausting, they’re often just a sign that your baby is growing and developing. With a little patience and a few small adjustments, your baby’s sleep schedule will likely return to normal soon.
